Cowboy Cuisine – Weatherford Downtown Cafe

By Steve Stevens

The way to know if you are eating in a good restaurant is by the people eating there. I don’t mean diplomats or foodies. I can tell you of a certain combination of diners that will tell you if a restaurant is good or not: locals, police officers and cowboys. This combination will never fail the palate.
You can see that at the Weatherford Downtown Cafe, where you get all the compliments of the perfect Texas home cooking restaurant. It sits in the downtown square surrounding the beautiful courthouse that was built in 1884 to 86.

You feel small town Texas when you enter the cafe. Murals of cowboys, an old jukebox, a moose head, a chalk board that covers one side of the room with all of their specialties are all accented by the original brick walls.

The cafe sits in a historical building that once was a drug store built in 1900. You can feel our western historical values as you sit inside the energetic restaurant. Peering outside to the courthouse allows your mind to wander to a different time.

Oh, yeah, and by the way the food is pretty good, too. I wanted to start with the deep fried bacon dish on this beautiful February morning. But my amazing wife gave me that look that you would only understand after being together with someone going into a second decade. I probably have put on a few extra pounds since I started writing this column. So I did what every self respecting cowboy would do. Instead of getting the chicken fried, big Texas waffle sandwich or giant pancakes, I needed to get some greens and something a little healthier.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
