Country music is defined by its instrumentation. Probably the first instrument people think of when they think of country music is the fiddle. We can all thank the great Bob Wills for that. Coming in a close second is the steel guitar. We can thank Bob Wills for that too. In the late 30s, Bob’s Steel Man, Leon McAuliffe hit the top 40 with “Steel Guitar Rag” which soon became an anthem in dance halls across the country.

Since then, almost every country act in the business has had a great steel guitar player. It’s where the whine and the twang got its start. Carrying on the tradition of the great steel players before her is Austin’s own Rose Sinclair. That’s right boys, step aside, there’s a new steel girl in town. Her latest album “Corcovado” is proof that she’s come to play and intends to hold her own in a predominantly man’s world. Not only that, but she’s best known for her non-pedal steel work on her double neck Fender and even crossing over to jazz.

The North Texas Fair & Rodeo, in Denton, Texas, just wrapped up its 96th year, and the North Texas Farm & Ranch magazine was glad to have gotten to be a part of the action!

Whether you’re an aspiring rodeo queen, a creative arts conisseur, or a rodeo enthusiast, the North Texas Fair & Rodeo has something for everyone. New rodeo royalty was named, the best of the best were selected out of impressive slates of sheep, goats, heifers, and steers, and each night of the rodeo was more exhilirating than the last.

The Great State of Texas is known for many things. Cattle drives, oil wells, barbecue and my personal favorite, music. Texas fiddle music began in far west Texas to celebrate the cotton harvest but most of all, for dancing.

My friend, Mike Markwardt, is doing his part to ensure the next generation of Texans know and understand the importance of this music, including how it influenced country and western music long before there was a place called Nashville and how Texas musicians of today are continuing this great legacy called Western swing.
