Red River Barrel Racing

Ardmore, Okla., was the place to be Sept. 22-25 for barrel racing trainers, competitors and owners. The Ardmore Barrel Futurity was conducted at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum for a weekend full of some of the toughest competition in the country.

The event featured Open races, a futurity, derby, American Quarter Horse Association classes, and an American qualifier. In the first round of the Futurity, Schelli Creacy ran a super fast 14.6 on Seayainlajollaeddie, to win the round for $3,632. In the second round, it was two-time Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world champion Brittany Tonozzi taking the win. Tonozzi, who now resides in Lampasas, Texas, rode Blazin Babe Olena to a 14.6 second run and $3,632.

Ashley Schafer claimed the average title for the Futurity, aboard Born On Derby Day. The five-year-old mare and Schafer, of Comanche, Texas, have been winning everywhere they go. The pair placed third in the first round and second in the second round, earning more than $10,000 total for their efforts.

AQHA Horse of the Year

Each year, when the professional rodeo season wraps on Sept. 30, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association announce the Nutrena Horse of the Year, presented by the American Quarter Horse Association, in each event. This is a prestigious award, voted on by the members of the associations. To be named Horse of the Year by fellow competitors is a high honor only a few achieve.

Managing Show Cattle Through The Winter

Husband and wife duo, Heather and Calvin Welper, are the Co-Owners and Operators or Two C Livestock, located in Valley View, Texas.

The pair’s operation has a show cattle focus where they raise and sell purebred heifers of all breeds and club calf Hereford steers.

When it comes to show cattle, the Welpers know a thing or two including how to prepare for the cold winter months and the Texas major show season run.

Grazing North Texas- Snow On The Mountain

Snow on the Mountain is an annual forb that is part of our landscape almost every year.

It is adapted to most of Texas and grows north to Montana and Minnesota and south to Mexico.

Although is seems to be most adapted to clay soils, this plant can be found on a wide variety of soil and moisture conditions.
