Message to our readers concerning COVID-19

Published

on

To all of our beloved NTFR readers,

Our community is grappling with the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19. As many local businesses make the very difficult decision to close their doors or go to delivery or pick-up services only, our magazine also faces disruption of delivery for our April 2020 issue of NTFR. Please keep in mind we offer free electronic subscriptions. To sign up, email [email protected] or call 940-872-5922. The April issue will be going up on the website very soon, so keep an eye out at www.ntfronline.com.

Please check your local convenience stores, grocery stores and farm stores as we will attempt to double up on magazines at the businesses that are remaining open. As always, you are more than welcome to come by our office at 200 Walnut Street in Bowie, Texas, to pick up your issue.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with all of those who have been impacted and affected. We hope that as the anxiety and stress unfolds in our current situation, our magazine and the articles within it can bring you some happiness during these difficult times. As always, we appreciate and thank each and every one of our readers. For any questions or concerns, please email [email protected] or call 940-872-5922.

Sincerely,

The NTFR Magazine team

Double M Ranch & Rescue

As the sun rises each day, so do the dozens of mouths that Meghan McGovern is responsible for getting fed. Rather than the sounds of a rooster crowing, McGovern hears the bellows and bleats of a variety of exotic deer, the chortle of kangaroos, the grunts of water buffaloes, and the chirps of a lemur.

Nestled against the banks of the Red River, the Double M Ranch and Rescue, with its high game fences and deer sprinkling the landscape,s its in stark contrast to the surrounding ranches.

“Having deer is kind of like eating potato chips- you can never actually have just one,” said McGovern with a laugh.

McGovern has several herds to take care of- fallow deer, axis deer, water buffalo, goats, and bison. In smaller numbers, there’s also a few kangaroos, a lemur, a potbelly pig, a pair of zebras, a watusi, and a few horses.

Acorn Toxicity

Published

By Barry Whitworth, DVM, MPH

With the prolonged drought, most pastures in Oklahoma end up in poor condition. With the lack of available forage, animals may go in search of alternative foods.

If oak trees are in the pastures, acorns may be a favorite meal for some livestock in the fall. This may result in oak poisoning.

Oak leaves, twigs, buds, and acorns may be toxic to some animals when consumed.
