Grazing North Texas – Kleingrass

Published

By Tony Dean

This issue of North Texas Farm & Ranch marks the one-year anniversary of the “Grazing North Texas” series. Up to this point in these articles about grazing land plants in North Texas, we have discussed only native plants. Beginning with this issue, we will from time to time highlight introduced plants that play an important part in our range and pasture land.
Kleingrass is an introduced summer perennial bunch grass. It can grow from 24” to 60” tall. Kleingrass can spread by seed and by enlargement of the clumps by tillers. It can also root from the stem nodes if they come in contact with wet soil. Although it can spread in various ways, it is still considered non-aggressive. The leaves are up to .25” wide and can grow up to 10” long.
