Imagine turning a one-pound block of butter into a work of art. Mini butter sculpting is one of the new contests the State Fair of Texas has added to the variety of categories available to those with creative abilities.
2020 was the first time mini butter sculpting was made available at the State Fair of Texas. Sculptor Tom Roberts was encouraged to try when the 1951 Son of a Gun State Fair of Texas poster inspired him. It depicts Big Tex, the 55- foot- tall cowboy, with a calf. Roberts realized the cowboy had no horse. Replacing the calf with a horse brings questions for the kid in all of us. What breed is the horse? What color and height? But most want to know his name. The 2020 Covid pandemic limited the viewing of the sculptures. The entries could only be seen virtually.
