Sweethearts of the Rodeo – Saint Jo Riding Club Celebrates 60 Years of Rodeo Royalty

By Jessica Crabtree

The North Texas town of Saint Jo is the oldest in Montague County. Nestled between rolling hills and the river valley in the heart of the North Texas Hill Country, its charm permeates throughout the scenery. During the frontier of Indians raids and cattle drives, Saint Jo originated as a social and supplies hub for cowboys along the trail, an iconic image that would become the town’s heritage. History derived from research estimates that between six and 10 million cattle came up the rugged cattle trail, pushed and prodded by approximately 35,000 cowboys.

Remaining true to their heritage, Saint Jo has always managed to pay tribute to its history. A testament to the town’s loyalty, symbolism and community spirit began well back in 1957 with the organization of the Saint Jo Riding Club orchestrated by Weldon Dennis.

The first Saint Jo Rodeo was in 1958. The founding members were Weldon Dennis as president, Charles Dennis as vice president, Starr Mann as secretary and treasurer, and Bobby Tuggle, Noah Pitman’s granddaughter was the first Sweetheart. Royalty among the rodeo participants was already emerging at the time.

In 1968 Marilyn Scott Dial (of the early Saint Jo pioneer Scott family) was Rodeo Sweetheart. Marilyn still takes an active leadership role in local community activities and organizations today.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
