Far More Than Football In Wilbarger County

On the cusps of football season and threshold of NFL’s celebrated Super Bowl LI, ESPN’s completing a documentary about six-man teams and following some from the Texas cities of Richland Springs, Balmorhea, Mount Calm, Calvert and Harrold. According to www.brownwoodtx.com, the piece is expected to air sometime in February on both the “SportsCenter” and “SC Featured.”

Harrold Independent School District’s purple and gold Hornets may have finished in December with an overall record of 0-8; however, the district’s initiatives, once again, warrant national attention.

First, the buzz of gun-toting teachers, then, the school’s “biological” gender restroom policy, and most recently, a female football player on the school’s six-man team. The vigor of Harrold ISD is quite interesting, epitomizing the “independent” of its name.

A tight-knit community, like family, Harrold is found about 35 miles west of Wichita Falls, in far eastern Wilbarger County. A tiny town to outsiders, it’s nonetheless well-known, and specifically in the last decade for the school’s revolutionary ways.

Comprised of grades pre-k through 12 and many transfers from nearby Vernon and Electra in Wichita County, Harrold ISD incorporates a few dozen secondary students, primarily girls, and has most likely grown accustom to the spotlight, which usually centers around board-approved policies.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
