Throughout the nation, there are towns and stories about towns that are passed down generation to generation. Most of the communities are long gone with no marker or remnants to show they once existed. It’s sad, but true, if these stories aren’t told they will vanish much like the towns, never to be told or known.
This holds true for the tiny community of Gourley, TX. Stoney resident, Bill Marquis said there is nothing left of the community that once was in both Denton and Wise Counties just off of present day Highway 380. Marquis had no explanation why the town died.
Very few people are left to tell the accounts of what was once Gourley. Perhaps the most comical is how Gourley got the reputation as the “dirty neck community.” Old timers told Marquis that way back when they were courting girls, the women of Gourley got the “dirty neck” label. Some even pronounced it “Gur-ly.’ This was because instead of bathing, the women would just powder their necks. Because of the heat, their necks would sweat causing them to have a ring of dirt. Marquis once had someone trying to identify where the “Dirty Neck Community” was located and he was the only one around who could identify it. Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”
With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
