Texas kicked off the New Year with a bang at the Texas Circuit Rodeo Finals held annually in Waco from Dec. 30 to Jan. 1. The top 12 contestants in each event vied for a spot to advance to the National Finals Rodeo Open, formerly known as the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo. The year-end champion and average champion get to make the trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., in July, and Texas was not short on rodeo talent.
In the bareback riding, the year-end winner was Chad Rutherford of Hillsboro, Texas. With winning two go-rounds, Rutherford also walked away with the average championship. In this case, the reserve year-end champion, Bill Tutor, will also qualify for the NFR Open. Rutherford and Tutor finished with $23,058 and $17,914 won in the circuit for 2021 respectively.
