There are lots of painful conditions horses can experience, and some are more difficult to recognize than others. Pain is very debilitating to horses that may lead to euthanasia in some cases that cannot be controlled or the underlying condition cannot be corrected. Pain alone can have major detrimental effects to a horse’s wellbeing and lead to secondary complications or issues. There also is a difference between acute pain versus chronic pain that needs to be managed or addressed differently in some cases. First the pain must be detected or recognized before it can be addressed. Albeit, the majority of painful conditions are obvious, but some can be subtle or difficult to detect, especially in more stoic horses.
