Cowboy Cuisine – Herd’s Hamburgers Jacksboro, Texas

By Steve Stevens

When I was 18, I went to my first rough stock school. When I got to the school, I told Dennis Rieners, World Champion Bronc Rider, that I wanted to learn all three rough stock events- bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding. He pretty much ignored me and told me, “We are starting with saddle broncs. Go get your saddle.”

So, I got the saddle that I was borrowing, put it on my bronc, and nodded my head. About as quick as I nodded, I was picking dirt out of my ear drums. I ran back to Mr. Rieners and asked what happened. He said in choice word that I will not use now, “Your saddle is messed up, your horse is messed up and you’re messed up.” I started to walk away because I didn’t quite understand and was a little embarrassed.

As I turned away he grabbed my shoulder and turned me back to him and said, “Let’s have you get really good at riding saddle broncs and then we will work on the other events.” I spent the better part of the next 12 years working on my bronc riding, never quite getting good enough to think about those other events. Looking back, the lesson was to “get really good at one thing, and you won’t have to worry about the others.”

Well, that is what they have done at Herd’s Hamburgers in Jacksboro, Texas. This last Saturday after horse training got put to the side due to rain, I decided to take a drive up to Jacksboro from Weatherford for an afternoon hamburger.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
