Cowboy Cuisine – The Other Mary’s

Published

By Steve Stevens

All foodies in North Texas have heard of and revered Mary’s, way west of the metroplex in Strawn. I’m here to tell you that there is another Mary’s that is a lot closer, still in the country, and still authentic American country cooking cuisine. Just head south on Bethel Rd. out of Weatherford to Tin Top, Texas.

Gaze at the beautiful ranches; imagine days in the past where the ranchers, cowboys and families went to have their special country meal to get the day started or to gather at after the long hard work day, a place they trusted for good service, good food and good camaraderie. This little country oasis is Mary’s Brazos Cafe.

Now this is a usual spot for me. I love going early and getting a hot cup of coffee, and although it is not on the menu together, I like to order catfish and eggs over easy. The eggs are always cooked to perfection and I am not kidding…perfection. When we were rodeoing years ago in Wyoming and Colorado, we would live out of our truck camper. Many times we would try to catch fish out of the cobbled rivers, and if we were lucky enough we would have a grand breakfast: fish and eggs.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
