Edith Wilmans : First Woman in Texas Legislation

Published

on

By Shannon Gillette

What do a goat farmer in Vineyard, Texas, a Women’s Rights activist and a Texas legislator have in common? In this particular case, they are all one person, Edith Therrel Wilmans. Wilmans was born in Lake Providence, La., to Benjamin and Mary Therrel in 1882.

The family moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1885. Her childhood was that of a typical girl before the turn of the century. She grew up, married Hall Wilmans and together they had three daughters, Edith, Halle and Frances. It was when her daughters were young that her life took an interesting turn.

Wilmans became involved in the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) because of her children. The issues faced by the PTA led Wilmans to become even more involved in issues that affected children, women and families. In 1914 she was instrumental in forming the Dallas Equal Suffrage Association.

She also was a founding member of the Dallas Housewives League and the Democratic Women of Dallas. She served as president of the Democratic Women of Dallas. She became a member of several other civic groups including the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the League of Business and Professional Women.

Wilmans was also an active member in two anti-communist organizations, the Minute Women and the Paul Revere Club. The subject matters which each of these organizations dealt with led Wilmans to become interested in the law and how laws are made.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
