Livin’ and Lovin’ in Clay County

By Janis Blackwell

Seeing as how this is the month for valentines, it just seems right to share the story of a true cowboy romance that blossomed into a lifetime love.  So here is the story of Jackie and Devon Bouldin and how they met and came to live, love and ranch in Clay County.

The Bouldin family moved from Alabama to Texas around the turn of the century buying land and making a home initially in Spanish Fort. However, at the end of World War II, the family bought the land on which  Jackie and Devon now live and gave Jackie’s dad, Lloyd,  the task of running that part of the family’s operation which then and now includes producing Bermuda hay, wheat and cattle.  Jackie grew up on this ranch working beside his dad daily until leaving for college at Tarleton where he received a degree in agriculture.

Even though he left agriculture and ranching for a season and worked outside the industry, he always had a love for the land and that land on which he was raised especially.  As it became apparent that his dad’s health was failing and he needed help, Jackie returned home to Clay County to be that help.
