Preserving America’s Farm History

Those of us who grew up in rural America remember well hot summer days riding the tractor with our dad or grand-dad. The members that make up the Cooke County Antique Tractor and Farm Machinery Club hold instances such as that close to their hearts. This is true for member Leon Fuhrmann of Myra, Texas. “I remember me and my brothers riding on the fender of my dad’s 1920’s tractor. By six or so we were driving that tractor and working.” Fuhrmann now owns that tractor and has since restored it to working order. Many are tractor-fanatics, if you will, who enjoy tractors for one reason or another. Some reasons are pieces that are heir-looms, machining niches, collector fascinations even preserving and restoring the American heritage of farming.

The club was established in 1985. The idea originated from Myra, Texas, resident, Doug Martin. Martin owned a B-John Deere tractor that was the 1932nd built out of 300,000. Wanting to showcase his piece of machinery, he was urged by Leon Fuhrmann to pursue a president and form a group. That candidate was Leon Knauf. Together the three called the first meeting and surprising enough, 25 people attended. Fuhrmann said, “We were definitely surprised at the interest in the club.” The purpose of the club centered around showcasing antique tractors and implements at a show each year. The first, held late the summer of ’86, was just the beginning. At the first show 25 tractors were on display, three to four plows, a threshing machine, binders, a horse-drawn hay baler and several other miscellaneous pieces of equipment.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
