The Building of a Fort: Fort Richardson

Published

on

By contributing writer Shannon Gillette
Fort Richardson, once the largest military fort in the country, stands in Jacksboro’s backyard. The fort was strategically centrally located between Weatherford, Decatur and Montague. All of these areas were heavily affected by Indian raids, making this location ideal for a frontier fort and military outpost. Three major Indian campaigns and hundreds of patrols were initiated from Fort Richardson. Its importance to frontier history and the settling of North Texas is monumental. Fortunately it is now a state park and historic site so that anyone can visit and experience for themselves this important chapter of Texas history.
The majority of the construction of Fort Richardson was completed in 1870. It was an active military fort for eleven years. The tales of Indian raids, brave Army soldiers, and everyday military life at Fort Richardson are far too numerous to describe in one short sitting, so perhaps the place to start is the actual foundation of the fort–the stone, mortar, and lumber structures that stood their ground to protect and to serve.
Fort Richardson once had over sixty buildings and structures. These included a guard station, housing for officers and their families, a library, stables and the quartermaster’s supply. To read more pick up the May 2014 issue of North Texas Farm & Ranch.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
