Tales N’ Trails Museum

The Tales ‘n’ Trails Museum is housed in an impressive stone building on the east edge of Nocona in Montague County. Built on land donated by the heirs of Joe Benton, an early pillar of the community, the museum opened its doors in 2010 after fifteen years of planning and fund raising. It had been a long-time dream of the citizens of Montague County to have a place to showcase the mementos of their history. Just inside the front door is the Legacy Tree with multicolored leaves bearing the names of donors to the project, with the color of the leaf indicating the level of the donation.
The museum focuses on five separate topics that are instrumental to the history of the area: Native American Culture, Western Heritage, Agriculture, the Oil and Gas
Industry and the Leather Industry. Award-winning videos narrated by Red Steagall, Forestburg native, weave the tales of each of the topics. Collections manager Nell Ann McBroom has an immense storehouse of knowledge and stories about the area and the exhibits. The Wichita Indians were early inhabitants of the area, especially near Spanish Fort to the north, and their story is told with a replica of their grass hut and displays of arrowheads and implements unearthed in the area. Huge wall narratives tell the story of Cynthia Ann Parker, her Comanche husband Peta Nocona, for whom the town is named, and their son Quanah Parker.

Seems lately these days Texas is becoming the envy of musicians from around the world.
With the overwhelming response to “Yellowstone,” the television series, Texas once again finds itself under the microscope of the world, much like the late 1980’s TV series know to all around the globe as “Dallas.”

With that said, the musician population in Texas is beginning to grow as many aspiring performers turn their sights on Texas instead of Nashville. Meet my newly-found friend and fellow musician Grace Partridge. This youthful 19 year old has recently made Texas her new home. She began fiddling at age four in Rigby, Idaho. Grace worked her way through the National Fiddle championships in Weiser, Idaho, becoming a five-time national champion. She’s even played on the Grand Ole Opry. Still yet, her desire to become a true Texas Fiddler has brought her to the Lone Star State. I’m pretty sure we can thank Bob Wills for that.
